The OPEN
Anthropology Institute
IS NOW OPEN
Anthropology desperately needs new thinking, new ideas and new goals. We need a think tank, an institution where we can bring academic and applied anthropology together in new ways. OAI is for those who love anthropology and know that, despite its problems, the discipline has radical potential to change the way we see our world, to solve problems and help human (and nonhuman) beings understand one another.

About Us
the open anthropology institute
The Open Anthropology Institute is an experiment, a platform, and a place where we want to make things happen. We think anthropology needs a place where we can bring academic and applied anthropology together in new ways. We believe this discipline has a radical potential to change the way we see our world, to solve problems and help human (and nonhuman) beings understand one another. From human centered design to healthcare that actually takes into account cultural context, industries and institutions are increasingly recognizing how understanding human behavior is the keystone to creating good business and lasting change. It’s time to make ourselves more visible and more helpful, so we can contribute to a positive, ethical, and meaningful future.
Projects and Activities
the everyday morality of food
Understanding food choice is more complicated than daily journaling, but gathering reflections how we “morally balance” health and pleasure in our everyday lives can provide deeper insight into what drives human behavior.
shame the rich
Shaming has been a mechanism of cultural control for thousands of years. How can we enlist functional social pressures to better our people and our planet?
online publishing
Pressure to publish combined with the slow-moving cogs of the academic system can slow progress and put good research behind unnecessary paywalls. Let’s work to change that.
boundless anthropology
Anthropology is integral to contemporary business and study, just listen to every Ted Talk from the last ten years. Help us advance the discipline behind it all.
